What Skip Sizes are Available to the General Public? by Vincent Rogers
Whilst very few skip hire companies will reserve certain size skips for commercial use only, the likelihood is that residential properties and the wider general public will only require the smaller available sizes. Therefore having an understanding of what types are available and how much waste they can take is vital to ensure that you have a clear understanding prior to hiring.
As you’re probably already well aware, a skip is a great way of getting rid of high quantities of waste. You will often see them outside building sites or houses undergoing renovations, slowly being filled with the site’s unwanted rubbish.
They provide a straightforward way of dealing with large jobs without having to ferry between your home, office or site and the local refuse site. The company that are hiring the skip will deliver it at a pre-determined time and then collect it and deal with the waste on your behalf. Therefore your only job is to make sure that it’s filled up.
Anyway, we’re deviating slightly here. The issue we’re trying to address with this article is the actual sizes and types of skip that are available to the general public. As said previously, none of the following will ordinarily be reserved for specific purposes and are therefore available to the wider community.
The major restriction though for many is cost. At the lower end of the spectrum skips are incredibly affordable. However, the more waste that the company has to deal with, the more you’ll get charged. Therefore a 40 cubic yard skip will be significantly more expensive to hire than a 10 cubic yard alternative. This sliding cost scale means that you need to be aware of how much waste you will be generating throughout the course of your work – whatever it may be.
Small Domestic Options – 1 or 2 Cubic Yards
At the bottom end of the spectrum is a yard or 2 cubic yard skip. These are purposely design for very small projects and will take up to around 35 black sacks of rubbish. It is a cost-effective way of clearing waste and certainly won’t require the same amount of space as some of the more bulky alternatives. This makes these perfect for your average driveway.
Mid-size Domestic Options – 6 Cubic Yards
The 6 cubic yard skip (or equivalent, depending on the hire firm) is a great mid-range option. Again the costing won’t be too high, but you’ll have double the capacity, allowing for the equivalent of around 60 black bags to be disposed of. This is usually enough for minor building work or a loft/garage clearance.
Large Domestic Options – 10 or 12 Cubic Yards
At just over 4 metres long, these are a very good size for anybody looking to do some pretty major work on their home and are even commonplace on many building sites. Again, using the black sack analogy, you can expect to get anywhere between 80 and 130 in this size of skip.
This is for the very biggest jobs, so perhaps a full house renovation or office clearance. It certainly isn’t for standard amounts of waste that might occur as a result of gardening work or partial renovations. This is the most expensive option of course within this range too, so be prepared to invest a little more.
As with all things though, the actual cost will largely depend on what type of waste you are getting rid of and the skip hire company. Some may charge you extra to remove hazardous materials or to separate recyclables on your behalf. So make sure that you get a couple of quotes and discuss any potential hidden damages.
If you find that 12 cubic yards still isn’t big enough then you may even be able to enquire about the larger skips available. Many hire firms will offer huge roll on roll off skips that can be anywhere up to 40 cubic yards. They can certainly hold a fair few black bin liners.
